Quizzes

I have written some online quizzes that post students’ results to a database - I plan to use these for homeworks in the future!
A few maths quizzes:
Brackets
Linear Sequences
Decimal Division
Decimal Multiplication

One ICT quiz, so far:
Javascript

(these were made using the excellent Hot Potatoes suite that we have on the school intranet)

Happy Numbers

Last lesson we looked at square numbers, so I thought it would be fun if we revisited Happy Numbers.

A happy number is a number for which the sum of the squares of the digits eventually equals 1. For instance, 203 is happy:
22 + 02 + 32 = 13
12 + 32 = 10
12 + 02 = 1.
Numbers that are not happy, such as 16, are called unhappy numbers.

In today’s lesson, we discovered that the following were ‘happy numbers’: 1, 7, 10, 13, 19, 23, 28, 31, 32.
Can you find any other happy numbers less than 100? How many are there?
Can you see a pattern?

Animal Rights

We looked at Animal Rights today and discussed some of the many issues that we felt were of importance.
Some good starting points on the internet are listed below (they may contain some disturbing images):
National Anti-Vivisection League
Animal Aid
RSPCA
PETA

Cloning

Some useful websites for information on cloning:
The Guardian’s weblog on cloning.
Loads of articles at New Scientist.
For the lighter side of cloning, visit Dolly’s Cloning Emporium.

“It would be a mistake for the United States Senate to allow any kind of human cloning to come out of that chamber.” - George W. Bush

Powers of ten (Year 9)

We know the names for the first few powers of ten:
101: ten
102: one hundred
103: one thousand
104: ten thousand
105: one hundred thousand
106: one million
.
.
(then it gets trickier)

When I was at school, I was taught that 1012 (one million million) is a billion; it seems that this is now called a trillion. A billion is now only a thousand million (109). I believe we changed to tie in with the common usage of the word in the USA.
It is much quicker to become a billionaire now than it was then (but will still take a while on my salary).

I asked in today’s lesson for you to find out the name given to 10100. A good place to look for the answer may be the search engine Google!

Squares and Triangles (Year 10)

We looked at square and triangular numbers today. We considered various ways of working them out, and we found some interesting relationships between the two.
Square numbers:

Triangular numbers:

At the end of the lesson we were working towards finding a formula for the nth triangle number. If you want to check that you have the correct formula, you can visit the Explorer section of the Count On website.

I like square numbers and triangular numbers - so you can imagine my delight when I discovered that there are many numbers that are both square and triangular. We can see from the above diagrams that 1 is such a number - can you find any more?
